HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(l'rom Our Special Correspondent.) MATTERS EDUCATIONAL. The monthly meeting of the Pctone District Uigli School Committee was held last evening, when there wore present: Messrs. M'Kenzie (chairman), Html, Abrahall, Kirk, Townsend, Cairns, and the Rev. J. D. Russell. The Education Board intimated that, nt its last meeting, a sum authorised had been sufficient to , enable the uncrenuess in the playground to be adjusted. The Department of Lands, writing in. reference to planting trees in the school ground, informed the committee that native trees were grown at the Stato nurseries suitable, for forest purposes, the understanding being that, if the superintendent has any trees ready for planting out, such trees can be distributed amongst school committees at cost iH'ice. In the matter of a miniature rifle range, tho board advised that the Loyal Orange Lodge had forwarded a resolution protest against the erection of a rifle range on tho Roman Catholic schoolground, and pointing out that there was ample room for tho range in the three schools at Pctone under tho control of the board. The chairman stated that the matter had been already dealt with, and also.that the matter of erecting a rifle range was proceeding favourably. . Major M'Donnld, in reply to tho committee's resolution regarding this matter, stated that he was pleased that Potone School was making an effort to establish a range of their own. In reference to tho High School question, the-. Education Hoard wrote asking that tho Potono Committee, with the Hutt School Committee, .should call a meeting of nil interested in the establishment of a High School for tho Hutt Valley. After considerable discussion it was resolved on tho motion of tho Rev. J. D. Russell to forward to the board the following resolution: "That tlie Petono District. High School Committee cannot agree to the suggested representation of the board, wliich does not appear an equitable one, but considers that, as tho Hutt and Peteno District High Schools and Borough Councils aro the parties most interested, they aro the bodies which should confer.as to a suifeiblo site. It, further considers that, as the rotono schools have such a majority of pupils, the Petono District High School should havo a larger number* of representatives than Hutt.' PRESENTATION. The business of tho Petono District High School Committeo having been disposed of last evening the chairman, , Mr. D. M'Kenzie, presented Mr. J. List, retiring secretary,, with a handsome silver cruet and sugar scuttle. Tho chairman, in making tho presentation remarked that iMr List had been a valued worker for five years and had been secretary of the committee for tivo years. An enjoyable evening was afterwards spent. Refreshments were provided' by Mesdiunes Burd and M'Kcnzio and tho Misses Burd and Cody. ■■■■■. SOCIAL EVENING. , Last evening at the Pctont Drill Hall the Ex-Mavals' Association entertained about sixty guests nt a euchre party and dance. Prizes wero won by ulcsclamcs Martin and Bull, Mr. C. P. O. Findlay and Gunner Bract. Tho entertainment was'thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. AN EVENING'S RINKING. At tho Lower Hutt .'VSkating Riiik last evening Mrs. Scales entertained about 200 guests at an- evening's rinking. Slipper was served in the rooms adjoining tho skating arena. SPORTS EVENTS. An event of interest will'bo hold on the Petonc Recreation Ground this, afternoon. . : This will he'a tug-of-wa'r and football match .between'.-teams: . chosen from. tho Petonc Railway Workships and from tho men employed on tho ; Hutt lino duplication works. Each side has some prominent players (both past and present), and s as they aro evenly matched an exciting contest should eventuate." It is expected that somo politicians and a largo number of railway men will attend. Tho proceeds are in aid of the Hutt -Doubling Works Benevolent Society. COURT CASES. , At a sitting of the Petono Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. W. Inglis and It. Mothos, J:P.'5, u Chinese storekeeper named. You Home . was charged with selling tobacco to a hoy under the age of 15 years. Explanation was forthcoming to. the elfect that the boy's parents had sent him for the tobacco. Tho Bench, however, convicted the Cliincso,' and ordered him to pay 11s. costs, at' tho same time warning him not to repn.it the offence. T. Stewart, R. Edwards, and FI" V: Poiiiton wcro ordered to pay Court costs 7s. for trespassing on the railway lino in the vicinity of Petono railway .station.
