Mr. David Crewe, ex-Mayor, who has been interesting himself in the matter of obtaining,better communication with the districts lying between'* Paliiatua and the. East Coast for years past, has hired the Olympic Theatre for Monday evening next, when he will deliver a public address on the importance of constructing a light ralway from Paliiatua to Pongaroa. Mr. Crewe invites the co-operation of all the local bodies, and particularly .requests that Pahiatua borough and county councillors and members of the Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce should be present.
CARTERTON.
Mr. D. T. King, builder, has in band the erection of a handsome dwelling at the southern end of the town for Mr. J. Rains. A writer in the local paper complains about the high price ruling for bread, the charge being 4d. the 21b. loaf. No concession is made for counter delivery. In Palmerston North, it is stated, that the price per 21b. loaf, is 2£d. over the counter and 3d. de-, livered. Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., have secured another win in the friendly societies' tourney, defeating the Court Marquis of Normanby, A.0.F., by 28 games to 20. The medals presented by Mr. Wi M. Hnlley to the Gladstone Football Club have been awarded as under:—Best forward, A. Hodge; best .back, D. Thompson; most improved back, E. Mason. The medals will be presented to the winners at the forthcoming .dance. . . • The late Mr. Joseph Strawbridge, whose death is recorded from Cambridge, resided for a large number of years at Waihakeke. He has many friends in this district, who will regret to hear of his demise.

The Otaki Bowling ; Club's "social" on; Wednesday night was attended by some SO couples. The general arrangements were good, and the hall had been elaborately decorated. - The following are tho hockey fixtures for the concluding championship matches:—August 24: ■ Rovers v.
