MASTERTON NOTES.
9- ■■ ', (Prom Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, August 19. A meeting of the council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerco was hold this afternoon, Mr. 6, C. Summerell presiding. The North Island :Railway League sent an invitation to the chamber to send delegates to a_ deputation' to wait upon the Prime Minister early nextjinohth.- Mr. C. E. Daniell said he had not much faith in deputations. He also ventured the suggestion- that the Auckland members- of the ' league were using the other members to further the interests, of the north of Auckland. Eventually Messrs. Yfoodie and Daniell were appointed delegate^. A case was called on in the Magistrate's' Court this" morning in which Ethel Coboroft,, of Featberston, sought summary separation from F. Cobcroft, on tho ; ground. of desertion. ' At the request of counsel for the 'defence a change' of venue- was granted from Masterton to Featherston. Arthur Jones was charged in the Magistrate's Court to-day . with' the theft of £2 10s. from the till of Margaret Knight's store at Gladstone Accused was remanded until Tuesday. The annual report-of the New Zealand Hereford Breeders' Association has just been issued. This shows a balanco of ■ assets over liabilities amounting to £517, 7s. 9d. "Advantage had been taken of the opportunity afforded , by J[r. E. Short's visit to Argentine.: to distribute, among breeders of that country, copies of the Hereford book, as evidence of the increased popularity of the breed. The report mentions that- a keen demand now exists in the Old Country for Herefords for export. The president and vice-presi-dent and - two members of the council retire by rotation.
