FOR THE CHILDREN.

THE HOSPITAL FUND. YESTERDAY'S CONTRIBUTIONS. The donations given or promised yesterday for the Children's • Hospital Fund are listed below. -Tho Mayor (Mr. Wilford) has pointed out that the lists published daily in the three newspapers do not tally. Ho states that duplications have occurred, some of the donations having, been acknowledged when promised and again when paid. In some instances tho amount collected by a lady has been put in, and then items making up that amount have ' followed, the 'whole -thus being added in twice over. Consequently the fund -has not reached so high a total as was reported.

■ Mr. Wilford' has informed The Dominion that, the amount, banked to credit of the fund by the Mayoress and Miss Joseph up to last night was JC-4700. Adding to this sum the amount of the promises that have been made and not yet fulfilled; as nearly as could be ascertained, he estimated the total at .£5720. He mentioned that the straightening out of the fund .and, the daily work in connection with it was fully employing one bank inspector, two clerks, and two secretaries. The fund was audited and signed "correct" by the inspector of the National Bank every day.

In connection with two of the ascertained errors, Mr. Wilford mentioned : that it was reported that the amount .raised for the fund : by the Rugby football match last Saturday was JM9, . whereas tho cheque that had been handed in was for £U 10s; and that Mr. Frank Shaw's donation was SS 3s, not Cs. 3d., as reported yesterday. It will be seen from Mr. Wilford's statement that about ..£IOOO worth of promises have yet to bo fulfilled. It is to be hoped that the donors will hand in the money 'without further delay, in order to facilitate the work of those in charge of the fund. Messrs. AY. F. Shortt and Son will conduct a gift auction in their rooms in Willis Street next Monday afternoon, when'a number of pictures and old coins, which have been donated 10 the fund, will be sold. Any ono desiring to make further gifts are requested to forward them to tho auctioneers. Tho following amounts received or promised yesterday are included in Mr. AVilford's. estimate of a .total of-.£5720, as •stated above:— Collectel by E. Morris, jun.—R. Siuden,' ,£1 Is.; R. H.
