WELLINGTON RUGBY UNION. INTERESTING BUSINESS. Tho 'Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby Union met last evening. There were present: Messrs. S. Brown (chairman), A. B. Wilson, E. O. Hales, J. Burns, W. Hardham, J. F. O'Sullivan, nlid W. G. Talbot (secretary). The Southern Football Club were granted refund of expenses incurred by fourthclass tcaai in travelling,, as. no referee attended to. coutrol their match with Athletic fourth. A letter was received from the Victoria College I'ootball Club, inviting members, to bo present at a complimentary dinner to be tendered to the Canterbury College team on August 20. Mr. H. Mortcnson, secretary of the Southern Football Club, -wroto protesting "against the way that the (third-class) championship is being decided. It is most unfair," said the writer, "to the members of our team, who have been drawn to play all tho leading and heaviest teams in the competition, and have- only, lost one game, and that against Wellington College, while such teams as Oriental (lost 4 and drawn 2), Poneke (lost 2, drawn 2), Petone (lost 1, drawn 1), and Porinia (lost G) are ahead of our team in points for the championship,.vide list published in The Dominion- on August 13." The letter further stated that the members were unaware that the points gained in the first round were not to count. They considered : that tho championship should be won on its merits.

On the motion-of Mr. E. O. Hales it was decided that tho Drawing Committee should ge into the question at tho end of tho meeting, Mr. A.'.B. Wilson to act on the committee in olace of Mr. Kweeney. _ On the motion of Mr. E. O. Hales, the junior championship was declared closed, and Petone awarded the championship. A letter from' tho Otago Union asked that five names be submitted of referees available for the Otago-Wellington match. It was . decided to ask tho Referees? Association to forward names of referees available.

It was decided to send a B team to piny the Horowhenua representatives n'n August 27,. Mr. J. Brown to be appointed manager... A Wednesday representative team is to bo sent to play Wairarapa B representatives at Carterton on August 25, Mr. J. F. O'Sullivan to be appointed manager. The Wairarapa junior representatives will come to Wellington on u date to be arranged. It was decided to:send the best team available to play it llorowheium-Manawatu combined team at Palmerston North on September 7. Mr. U. Fordyce, referee, iiyote reporting that in the fourth-class match Petone v. Oriental he had occasion to order off. a Petone player, Drummond, for tripping an Oriental player. Drummond appeared before the union and stated that, he ivas on the-line-out. He secured the /ball and placed it at toe. Ho missed it with tho right foot and then s\vung his left foot to meet it. The opposing half was endeavouring to snap the ball away nt the time, and Drummond accidentally, tripped him. Then, said Drummond, "Tho referee said 'Go off.' I said, 'What for?' He said, 'Tripping that man.' I said, 'I never done it on purpose.' Kc said, 'Go•off, 1-had enough last Saturday.'" 'In answer to questions, Drummond stated that this was his second year of playing. The referee had not warned him at all. As .Mr. Fordyce did not attend the meeting, it was decided to write and tell him that the matter wa3 being held up pending his appearance to give evidence. The game was spoiled by a heavy wind, which made accurate handling of | the ball impossible. The local team had easily the best,of the first spell/which ended in their favour by 9 points to 6. In. the second spell- 'the order 'was changed, and Hawke's Bay played a fine 1 game with the, wind at their backs. Their forwards .were a fast and heavy. lot, and, like the backs, handled well, considering the day. Tho home team, who in the ■' first spell had been making good passing rushes, failed to get. the ball from the scrum, but the game was, nevertheless, more even than the points convey, since eleven, of the points put on in the second spell were from kicks—, two "pots" and a penalty-goal. The following scored for the winners: Scullion, Bnssßll, and .M'Cormick. ' Smith and Fitzgerald 'potted goals; and the latter kicked a penalty-goal. WEDNESDAY COMPETITION. ' Yesterday .the Wednesday Rugby football 'competition' was advanced another stage, the weather being fine, and all the grounds in fair order. By defeating Butchers yesterday, at " Athletic Park, Tramways were/ able to maintain their unbeaten record for' this' season. The other match at the Park resulted, in Oriental defeating Star after an interesting contest. .•■''.

ORIENTAL, 13; STAR, 9 In the first spell Oriental had all the best of the play, and tries were scored by M'Gill (2) and Rankin, two of the tries being converted by Salmon. For Star, Gemmell scored an unconverted try. In' the second spell Star gave their opponents plenty of work, but were unablo to even up the scores, though Standen scored a try and Mount kicked a penalty. goal. The game ended: Oriental, 13; Star, 9.

TRAMWAYS, 13; BUTCHERS,. 6. . Butchers led by G points to nil in the first.spell, Hastings scoring a try and Killcen a try. The latter score was a neat piece of football, Killeen intercepting a pass and running right through the opposing team. In the second half, Tramways, rose to the occasion, and two tries caine as a result of forward rushes. Bowc and Bramley scored the tries, which were both converted by Pcrkinson. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., tried conclusions yesterday afternoon .at Duppa Street, the gam« resulting in a win Vor the latter team by 11 points to 3. Play was interesting throughout. It is purposed to play a match annually between the employees of the firms named. ASSOCIATION. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The weekly meeting of the Wellington Football Association was held in tho Y.M.C.A. Inst evening, Mr. H. N. Holmes presiding. A letter was received from the Porirua Mental Hospital Club slating that their third division, learn would bo permitted to travel to' Wellington on Saturday next to play off for tho championship with tho Wanderers' team. It was decided that tho match bo played as a curtain-raiser to the Brown Shield match nest Saturday at 1,15 p.m.

The Wellington Iliigbv anion notified that they could not postpone their matches on Saturday next as requested by tiio association. The Wellington Lacrosse Association wrote agreeing to allow the W'.F.A. the use uf their part of the Basin Kcsorvc on Saturday next, but stated that they were unable to postpone tiieir matches on other grounds. They would, however, at each match take up a collection in aid of the Children's Hospital Vimil. It was decided to thank the lacros?:.' Association for their offer, and accept same. The. Aluimv.-ftln '.Association wrote statins that tho Showground at Palmers-ton would be available on almost any Wednesday in September, and suggested that a Wellington Wednesday team should piny the Mnnawatu teani some time during that month. The hon. secretary of Airs'. Wilford's Hospital Committee wrote thanking the committee for the offer to donate hall the: proceeds of the forthcoming Brown Shield match to the Children's Hospital Fund.

The Wanderers Club wrote stating that the Webb Street Primitive Methodist Club had notified that they timid not meet them in Hie League competition.— Resolved to award Wanderers the match. lhe secretary of the.New Zealand Association notified the following suspensions, which were confirmed:—J. Harrison, Otago, five years, from Juno, 1009; A. Johnstone, Wellington, for tho rest of the present season. The "City Council wrote giving the Association permission to fly streamers on the tram-cars advertising' the Brown Shield match, Otugo v. Wellington. Mr. H. Ci. Jlayer wrote resigning the treasurorship of the association. Consideration of the resignation was held over until after the Brown Shield match. It was decided that the Otago team be quartered at. the Arcadia Hotel during their stay in Wellington.

BROWN SHIELD HATCH. At tho Basin Deserve next Saturday afternoon, an Association football match between Otago and Wellington for the Brown Shield' will be played. Half the proceeds of this match are in aid) of tho Children's Hospital funds. Further particulars regarding the match will appear in to-morrow's issue.

SOME SCRAPPY'GAMES. Fine weather,'.soft turf, and indifferent' football, were the.distinguishing features of Wednesday' Footlnll Association League -matches yesterday afternoon. The match.between Union and Olympic al Duppa Street was a scrappy affair, in several places being hardly worthy of the name of football. Olympic defeated Union by four goals to two, though the merit of at least two of the winner's goals was doubtful, there being a good, deal of off-side play. Sharkey, A. X. W. •Alouatt, and Cheshire scored for the winners, and Trevethiek and Kuch did the honours for the losing team. J[r. J. Davidson was the referee. At Miramar a one-sided contest was waged between Artillery' uml Y.M.C.A., the result, four goals to one in favour of Artillery, being a fair indication of tho form of the contestants. . Hearts B defaulted to Hearts A.
