(From Our Special Correspondent.) ■ ' . —:— t ■ The effort of the proprietors of the Lower Hutt Skating Eiuk in putting on a carniv.il last night to increase .the funds of the Children's Hospital met with great support'from Hutt and Wellington residents. The novel programme delighted the .audience, and was interest-ing-throughout.. Tho principle winners of the many prizes offered for events and costumes are ns " under:—Best poster dress, ladies, Miss Casey;' best poster dress (girls), Miss Bowers; best fancy dress (ladies), Mrs. Duggjin; best fancy dress (girls),. Miss Cuddy; best poster dress (gents.), Mr. Trcvothick; best fancy dross (gents.), Mr.'Currio; most comical character, Mr. Bates; couples' race; Miss; Bowie; ladies' musical chairs, Miss; Bowie; men's musical , chairs, ' Air. E.. M'lntosli.
The first carnival, under the management of the Petono Palace Theatre Company, was held .last evening. Every available seat was occupied before S o'clock, and thoso who were unfortunate enough to be late had! to'be content. In stand. Skaters dressed in n wonderful variety of fancy and paster costumes thronged the floor, presenting a highly and spectacular scene. The floor was in- excellent skating condition, and,tho various events caused much amusement, and some exciting finishes 'were Witnessed. The general arrangements were excellent, and reflect great credit on the secretary of the company. Mr. E. \V. Woodhouse. The prizes were, awarded as follow:—Ladies' most original dress, Miss B. M'lnnes j ■ men's most original dress, Mr. Parranti' ladies' poster dress, Miss Smith; men's poster, Mr. Mason; most comical make-up, Mr/Parkinson; ladies' handicap, Miss E. M'lnness; egg and spoon race, Miss A.' Smith; learners' race, Mr. B.- Howe; couples' race, Mr.' and Mrs. Morris; ladies' mile race, Miss E. M f lnness; sack race, Mr. Parr, men's musical chairs, Mr. M'Leary, 'waltzing couples, Miss Wilson and Mr. Moncvief. The ninth annual social of the Petone Rowing Club was held last evening. There were about 100 people present, and an enjoyable evening was spent. The hall and supper rooms were appropriately decorated, and during the evening the patron, Mr. K. Mothes, presented tho trophies won during last season.
