'.: ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL. '; The anniversary of the Central Mission was further celebrated last night by means of , a social evening in the Mission Hall, Herbert Street. The- Eev! S. J. Serpell presided over a large attendance, and was supported by the Eev; C. H. Laws,-president of the' , Methodist Confer-' ence, tne Rev. E. 0. Blamires, superintendent of the Mission, and the Eev. S. J. Garlick, of Hutt. Encouraging. reports were read by Mr. E. Baker (trust secretary),. Mr; W. Parke (treasurer), Mrs. AVhite (C.E. Society), .and Mr. Weston (Silver Baud). The general report, read by Mr. Baker, alluded with gratitude to the coming of the Rev. E. 0. Blamires and Mrs. Blamires, a few months ago, to superintend the Mission. At the Sunday evening "People's services" in the King's Theatre many had decided to lead the Christian life. It was hoped that the mission would in the near future have its own buildings in which to conduct the various services that are held from time to time. Reference was also made to the Men's Brotherhood to be started next Sunday. The Rev. C..H. Laws, in a short speech, dertlt .with the need of wise adaptation on the part of the churches of the present day. This was the age of fhe crowning of democracy, the spread of education, and cheap scepticism, with nonchurchgoers on the one hand and the-Gospel-hardened on the other. The church that did not adapt itself, to the needs of the time would go. ' The Rev. E. 0. Blamires, in a short address, commended the financial effort now being made to the sympathetic-help of those present. ■ - ■ Selections were played by the. Mission Band," and the choir rendered the ailthem, "Exalt Him, all ye People!" The programme also included a recitation by Mr..B. Cooper, a solo by Master Alleii, and a cornet duet by Messrs. AV. Grant and W.' Barker. During tho serving of refreshments at the close, a vote of thanks to tho=e who had assisted was proposed in a humorous speech by Mr. J. Lomas and heartily carried.
