The Union Parliament held its fortnightly meeting in the Y.iI.C.A. Rooms last evening, when the Premier (Jlr Dickinson) brought down a Land Bill" embodying proposals to grant the freehold to Crown and settlement tenants subject to residential conditions and 'imitation of areas. There was a large attendance of members, and an animated discussion took place on the question of "Leasehold v. Freehold." Mr. E. T. Robertson, Consular-Agent for Italy, has received official intimation that, in connection with the great earthquake which took place in Sicily and Calabria in December, 1908, the Italian Government has conferred medals on those who rendered conspicuous service in respect to the relief of the victims of the calamity, which, it will l>o remembered, destroyed the cities of Messina and Reggio, besides doing great damago in the Calabrian provinces. A silver medal has been awarded to the Right Hon. Sir J. G. Ward, Prime Minister of New Zealand, while a bronze one has been awarded to the Hon. T. w> , Hislop, who was Mayor of Wellington at the time.
