' Dr. Brenel, Director of the Tropical Diseases Institute, reports that the earth--eating disease is prevalent in the Cairns district in Northern Queensland, and a number of children are treated in tho hospital every week. \ The disease, so far as children are concerned, is a permanent and blighting influence on their mental and moral development. -, - ' Touching the question of whether white men could stand the strain of cutting sugar-cane in the tropics, Dr. Brenel is of opinion that alcoholism and other debilitating habits djd much more to impair the health of tho white workers than the actual eano-cutting.
