AT THE BACK OF THE STAGE. -'..-; SWEETS-AND AUTOGRAPHS.; - A 1 Dominion'representative visited the ; back-of-the stage at the Opera House on ' Tuesday evening and witnessed .a scene which: convinced him of tho genuine enthusiasm with ■ which, ever} member of Mr.' Hugh Ward's; company is imbued in Vegard ,to'. tho Children's Hospital money-raising scheme. On three or four tables, were, piles, of empty sweet boxes enveloped one..into the. other, each inscribed with the autographs of members -of •■ tho.company.-, Pens and ink .were everywhere,'and as. each lady and. gentleman of,, the, company found him or herself with :a minute, or two to spare, they seized tho nearest pen and started in on a pile .of boxes.. The Eccno was very, quaint. Miss Palotta, .who is"• all "enthusiasm, assured the.
writer that she had signed her autograph 750 times, and was beginning ' to wish..' for another ..name, if it was only for the relief it would give her in the sweet-box task. Miss Ceiia Ghiloni said 'she was' threatened' with "writer's cramp," and bad arrived at that stage when she had to ask othsrs how to spell her own-name. Mr; Wykeham was busy with .pen and ink and a great, paste-pot drafting out the programme for Saturday's matinee, and Mr.. Aubrey Mallalieu lost all count of "Rector's" and tho girl, in. a strenuous endeavour to write his signature on a. tower of boxes against an unstable bit,of scenery in a ina.-nner that would not disgrace his family. It was all good.to'sce- and shows tho spirit in which the project has been taken up by this pleasant company of players. Up till 10 o'clock on Tuesday evening the' members of the company had inscribed in all 7500 signatures, and there is still .work to do. THE SUBSCRIPTION LIST. £. s. d.
