FEDERAL LAND TAX.
THE BILL INTRODUCED. NO EXEMPTION ALLOWED TO ABSENTEES. RESUMPTION OF ESTATES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Rec. August 10, 11.30 p.m.) Melbourne, August 10. /In the House of Representatives the Land Tax Assessment Bill, one of tho most important and far-reaching measures in tho Labour programme,, has been introduced and read a first time. The general administration of the tax will bo placed under a commissioner, subject to a Minister. A deputy-com-missioner may also be appointed. The tax will be levied on all unimproved lands in Australia, excepting those used for church and public purposes. All land owned by absentees from Australia is taxable, but -in. the case of non-absentees there will be an exemption 'of all land, the unimproved value of which does not exceed iEoOfiO. The Commonwealth may acquire lands where/the High Court is not satisfied that iiitdsr-valuation was not made wilfully- to evade taxation. The Bill provides for the imposition of a penalty of .£SOO, together with treble the tax, where evasion is attempted. . i
