Palmerstoh North, August 9. ' Mi. T. R. Hodder presided over tho annual meeting of tho Palmerston Sun T day School Union last night, nhen there was a-large attendance of toichers. The fourth annual rt'port was read and adopted. The following officers were elected for tlio ensuing year — President, Mr. J. Wallace; vice-nre ldents, Messrs. G. H. Beriiiott and Elliott; secretary and treasurer, Mr J J. Whitehead. It was resolved to hold a public meeting in the Opera Houso at an early date arid request the Hon 0. JTowlds to present tho prizes moii at the annual examination.
A deputation from the Borough Council waited on the Kairanga Count} Council this afternoon to ask that a sub-committee be set up to confer with a committee of the Borough Council re garding the formation of a river' board t(Tcontrol the Manawatu River from tlio Gorge to the Longburii railway brklgu After hearing tho deputation',". the County Council discussed thte matter; and decided not to take any action. '.
Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, arrived in Palmerston this afternoon, the purpose of his visit being to endeavour to bring about a settlement in the demands made by the Dairy Workers'' Union. Messrs. W, Pryor (score-, tary of the Employers' Federation) and J. G. Hajkness (secretary of the National Dairy Association)-are also here on the same'business. ■
