Star Boating Club Dance. \ The annual ball, given by the Star Boating Club in tho Concert Room of the Town Hall last evening, proved, as it usually does; to bo a most onjoyable affair. Although there wore- a largo number of peoplo present, the room was not too crowded for dancing, and, a thing that is not. always the case at dances nowadays, ladies were- somewhat in tho minority. A great amount of trouble had been gone to in the decorations, and every evidence was given that this was a ball in connection with boating people. Tho staircase , aud landings upstairs had been carpeted and arranged with banks of foliage and palms, and if one explored sufficiently, all sorts of pleasant sitting-out places wore discoverable. In tlie Concert Chamber thick ropes of lycopbdium had been carried from corner to corner across tlie room below the ceiling, while from the gasolier alternate streamers of blue and white, the club colours, fastened to tho gallery and sides of the room formed tho pretty canopy which adds sudh an effective 'touch to any ball-room. Over-the stage, which was carpeted and furnished as a sitting-out place, was suspended a four-oar rowing boat, while a sculling boat over-hung the entrance to the room. Lycopodium was wreathed around the pillars while, encasing (them, were sheaths of oars. Oars 'again, fastened with bluo and white, and trails of lycopodium, decorated the sides of tho walls, while tho windows were hidden with pretty curtains. Mrs. H. B. Bridge and Miss Ba'rnetthad given a great deal of their assistance during the day in arranging these pretty touches. Supper was. laid, in a scroened-off part of the corridor, on a number of small tables and one,'or two long ones, while white narcissi and lycopodium, with bands tif pale bluo ribbon running down the centre of tho tables formed the decorations;
The chaperones present wero Mrs. Bridge, wearing a black silk dress,with silver beaded trimming; Mrs. John Anderson, a black silk dress; and Mrs. Osborne-Gibbs, wearing ; black silk. Spnio very, .old: members of tho Star Boa , ting Olub.-Mr. Hugh Pollen and Mr. Osborne-Gibbs, showed their keen interest in its affairs by their presence, during the .evening. Dudley, the last two members acting as joint secretaries as well. Palmerston North News. A most successful and amusing variety entertainment was given at the Opera House last night by a number of amateurs, in aid of the All Saints' Building Fund. A committee of ladies arranged five very effective tableaux, perhaps tho most striking being "Queen Katherine's Dream," with tho cloud ,of angels in the background. "The G.ipsy Camp" was also very pretty, the gipsies singing several choruses. Other tableaux were "Over the Garden Wall," 'Mary, Quito Contraryj", "The Old Woman in the Shoe," the last very rjuaint and amusing. Among those taking nart in the tableaux wero Misses Abraham, Monro, Russell, Hewitt, Waldegrave, Barber, and Mr. H. Cooper and Captain Dudley Hewitt, and a host of small people, .who acquitted themselves most creditably. In the intervals of the tableaux Mr. Roley Robertson (Wellington) and Messrs. H. Palmor and Jeff erics .kept the audjonco in fits of laughter with their comic songs. Tho second half\ of the programme consisted in an exhibition by Professor Bon Ton of his performing dogs. Tlie professor (Mr. L. A. Abraham) was assisted by Mr. Sniff, of Snuffle Alloy (Mr. H. Gifford Mooro), and together wore irresistible. Tho troupe wero most lifelike, and went through their various tricks in tho most amusing manner. They were cleverly disguised by Jong suits of rough cloth, dyed to suit tho colour of ench breed, and their headdresses wero most cleverly made by Miss Clark. The troup consisted of Messrs. Bnrraud, Abraham, Keeblo, Pratt, Hawkins, aild Bond.
The last item on the programme was a flower ballot, danced by eighty girls, and arranged by Miss Russell, assisted by Misses Warburton, Cargill, and Beswick. The ballet opened with twentyfour girls dressed us lilies, irises, jonquils, and bluebells, who did pretty skirt dances aiid' marching evolutions, finally grouping at the back of the stage. Then came on twenty-four roses, who also went through pretty measures before grouping in front of the taller girls. These vera followed by the
chrysanthemums, and they in turn by butterflies, fairies, scarlet-runners, nua snowdrops, the-latter being tiny little tots, who looked very sweet in their dainty little, flower frocks. Solos vfero danced by' Hiss Russell, little Miss Peggy Abraham (queen of the fairies), and Misses Keeling and. Harpe'r (rose and brownie). The house was packed, and the whole performance must have been very gratifying to the many helpers who have been working so hard for weeks practising and sewing at all the different costumes. ■ . . - Mr. J.
