DEBATE IN A PRESBYTERY.
MODERATOR OVER-RULED,

Chris tcliurch, August 9. : At to-day's meeting of. the Christchurch Presbytery, Dr. Erwin reported that he had not been able to agree with the .Rev. C. Murray on the matter of ( tho report on tho "Directory of Public .Worship," with which he agreed, i Mr. Murray said that he did not agree with the book, arid proceeded to discuss it at length. :. ' Th'e' v ßev. T. 'lait rose'to a point of order, and said that he, did not think .that details were relevant. ' The.-Moderator ruled that Mr. Mur-' ray was out-of. order.- '•- 1 ' '-■".'■■■ ■■ Mr. , Murray , coutended that ho waa certainly not out of order, and continued to speak. He was, however, eventually prevailed upon to sit down.' Several speakers' considered- that he should '• be heard, and, on the matte? being put to the meeting, the Modera« tor's ruling was defeated, three ministers only being ju favour' of it, and the motion that Mr. Murray be heard was. carried. :.■■■'•• The Moderator said that a new Moderator had better bo appointed. It was a serious thing for a Moderator's ruling to be. questioned, and he would vacate- his seat. . , A voice: Be a man. - . . The Moderator remained in' the chair. Dr. Erwin moved that, the Presbyterj should approve generally of the "Directory for Public Worship" issued by the Presbyterian Church of England aa an expression of the sense in which the Church interpreted the "Westminster Directory for Public Worship." Tilts Rev. T. 'fait moved as an amendment that the Presbytery should not approve of any particular book, ouii should nsk the' Assembly to 'consider the drawing up of a book of its own. The amendment was carried. : .. ' ■
