"A VERY SERIOUS POSITION."
LOSS OF POPULATION.
.Do you think that we rejoice, at the departure of .people from this Dominion? This was a query put by Mr. • Buchanan, M.P., to Government mem« -.( bers last night; He had just been com- :.' bating 'a statement made By the Prime Minister at Wiuto'n with reference to '. the position of New Zealand!as regards arrivals and departures. As.a mattei of fact, continued Mrv Buchanan, the : Dominion was losing population in that the departures were exceeding the arrivals. For the. six months ended June . 30 last, the departures had exceeded the arrivals by 2853. If it liad not been that the arrivals during the same period included 1119 assisted immigrants the • loss would have been, close on 4000. "It. is a very serious. position," added ; .' Mr. Buchanan, "and it is the duty "of ..'•'' the Government to look into the matter, carefully and see whether a remedy, can be found.'\ •'. . : - ;
