CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FUND, WELLS OF SYMPATHY NOT DRIED UP PUBLIC IN GENEROUS MOOD. "The wells of sympathy aro not dried up yet," is a phrase that fell from Mr. Wilford yesterday, and it exactly describes tho position in reference to tho rapidly-accumulating £unds that are being subscribed for a now children's hospital. A glance at the list will show that tho Churches have made a beginning, and no doubt moro will be heard from them ere the matter ends.. The donation from the Tramways' Overhead Department is not alone welcome in itself, but suggests that many similar avenues of supply may be opened up. Mr. Wilford heartily thanks tho Tramway and Pipe Bands for the valuable assistance they rendered on Sunday. Lists bearing the Chinese Consul's signature aro being circulated amongst his compatriots, and a generous response is confidently anticipated. It is plain that although money is flowing in freely, available supplies are very far from being exhausted. Prospects Still Bright. Interviewed yesterday, Mr. WHforfl eaid that the readiness with .which subscriptions were forthcoming opened up proepects of a. much more ambitious work ■than had a't the outset been thought of. A building costing .£7OOO would serve reasonably to meet the needs of sick-children at the moment; but a .great deal more could with advantage bs spent in their service, and tho indications suggested that- an extension of the original pro--visional scheme would be possible. Quite possibly, said Mr. Wilford, not .£3500 only but .£SOOO would bo collected. This, with tho Government subsidy, would swell to ,£II,OOO, a sum for which a building could be erected with an eye to requirements as well as to present necessity'. -"I dont know exactly where to collect, another .£SOO to-morrow, but I am anxiously bent on getting it," was tho Mayor's concluding remark. ■ As all of tlie money will not be needed at once for the Children's Hospital,, Mrs. Wilford has placed the sum of JE6OO on fixed deposit in order that it may. bo earning interest until actually required. Premier. for the erection,of a Children's Hospital was' referred to by the 'J?nmo Minister in his post office speech yesterday, apropos of an old-time proposal recalled by hun to raise a subscription for a postal sorvice between Wellington and tho Bay of Islands. "At the present time," said Sir Joseph, "there is a most important subscription being raised for the erection of a Children's Hospital, a work which the Lady Mayoress, Mrs. Wilford, has taken in hand. So to-day history repeats itself, only this time, they are responding in thousands, whereas on the former occasion they, had to abandon the subscription." . LIST OF SUBSCRIPTIONS. , ' : £ s. d. The full programme of Saturday's matinee performance in-aid of the Children's Hospital will be announced tomorrow. AUCTIONING THE SEATS. It has been, arranged that Miss Grace Palotta will auction. the seats for tho Children's Hospital inatinco by the Hugh Ward Compauy at the meeting to be held in the Town Hall at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The box plan of the seats not sold by auction will be opened at the Dresden warehouse on Friday morning. . AUTOGRAPHERS AT WORK. There will be a rush for sweets at tho matinee performance to be given by the Hugh Ward Company at the Opera House on Saturday afternoon. The members of the company have pnt in. many hours autographing the boxes which are later on to be filled with sweets and purveyed among the audience at tho monster benefit performance : A BRIGHT IDEA. Mr. Hugh Ward suggests that Friday' next be set aside as "Children's Hospital Day" at the State schools of the city, tho idea being that the children should contribute pennies (or any other coin of the realm) in aid of the Children's Hospital. He points out that it would bo a happy thought for the children to tnow in the future that they assisted, however lnfinitesimally, in the erection of the Children's Hospital. Of course, the idea depends on the co-operation of the headmasters, who, he feels, would snrely place no obstacles in the way of such.; a scheme. ; . , ' A BENEFIT PEEFOEMANCE. The proprietors of the picture entertainment at the King's Theatre (West's Pictures, Ltd., and Messrs. Linley and Donovan) have generously decided to set aside the whole of the proceeds of tonight's entertainment for the benefit of the Children's Hospital fund. A epecial programme of exceptional interest has been provided for the occasion, and there is little doubt that the public will make a hiiiidsome response to the liberality of this enterprising firm of popular entertainers.
