BUT SltrCH DAMAGE DONE (Bγ Teleuraph.-PfcßS AEsoelatloD.l Dunedin, August 8. A firo, the origin of which is eo fat unexplained, broke out in an old wooden building containing 34 rooms, and belonging to the estate of Elizabeth O'Kane, at Mosgiel, to-night. . ~ ' . The lire was discovered about 6.50, and appeared to originate in the premises of George Patterson, cabinetmaker,'■> who occupied two rooms upstairs, and two on ' ' tho ground floor. Mr. Patterson had been ill, aiid had not been in the building since Friday. Sirs. Patterson, who was i looking, ni'tor the business in his absence, left the place. at 5.50. She , states that ' ■ there had been no fire or light in the place during the day. The fire brigade'got the flames under after an hour's • fight, but the building -h was badly damaged. The portion destroyed included the rooms occupied by ' Mr. Patterson, two rooms occupied byMr. Newman, painter and paperhnnger, three rooms ;occupied by 'Mrs.: \Kidd, fruiterer and confectioner, the premises of Mr. Mitchell, pastrycook and proprietor of tea-rooms, ■ and the offices and siore- ; room of the local branch of the Otago ■■ - , larmers . Co-operative Association.. The' Volunteer Hall was slightly damaged. The building was insured for .£6OO in ; the Atlas Office, but the loss is estimated ■. ut .£2OO above that amount. Mr. Patterson's stock was insured for ,£l5O with.the' Alliance Company, but, as his stock was ' heavy, he estimates his loss at JE2OO over the insurance. Mr. Mitchell had a policy for .£l5O with the Northern ' Company. Mr. Newman valued his stock at j>soo, bnt it was insured for only ,£IOO in the Atlas Office'. About £100 worth was saved. Mrs. Kidd, who had no insurance, estimates her. Loss 1 at about .£IOO. The Otago Farmers' Go-operative Association had a fairly heavy stock, and its loss is estimated at about .£4OO.
