TURKEY BUYS BATTLESHIPS.

It' 15 announced that tho Turkish Government is purchasing riot two, but four, Gorman battleships of the Brandenburg class. On Wednesday it was cabled that the Turkish Government had-purchased the battleships Worth and Brandenburg for .£1,000,000, and that payment was to be made partly out of the funds lyinE w the credit of tho es-Sultan Abdul Hamid in tho Deutsche Bank at Berlin. The purchase was said to to intended as a reply to the Greek purchase - of the cruiser Averoff. The Brandenburg is a battleship of 9871 tons, and she was built in 1891 at a cost of .£606,500, exclusive of armament. She carries 6ix 11-inch guns, and steams at 161 knots. . The Germans would appear to be doing well, in their deals with Turkey. In April it was reported that Germany had offered. to sell the araioured cruiser Blucher to Turkey for .£2,000,000. live vessel in question cost ; ,£1,882,000, and, though fast and well armed, is distinctly inferior to the later British apd German cruiser-battleships.
