REGISTRATION CANCELLED.
UNIONS AND ARBITRATION LAAV
The Westport-Stockton Coal Miners' Industrial Union of Workers, comprising 164 members, has given notice of its intention '-to cancel its registration under the Industrial- Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1908. As other unions have taken similar 1 action recently. a Dominion representative made inquiries, and elicited some information regarding the attitude of the unions to the Arbitration Act. A well-known Labour official stated that, generally speaking, of late'the larger, and therefore stronger, unions are beginning to find out that they are not reoeiving the benefits they- expected' under the Act, therefore tho "spirit of brotherly love" in regard to the smaller unions is not ~what it ought ,to„be. _..ln 1890, at the time'ol' the v; Big'strike, 1 oi- shortly afterwards, every union decided to help each other; and through the instrumentality of the Arbitration-Act the strong helped the weak. But .to-day : the unions who have large membership find-that they can by cancelling their registration practically take the law in their own .hands. These unions do not seem to entertain the same feeling toward the weaker unions that they did previously. "Until some wise head sees a way out of the difficulty there is bound to be trouble," said the official in conclusion. < "
