HUTT RAILWAY DUPLICATION,
APPROACHING COMPLETION. . It is just about six years since the work of duplicating the Hutt railway line was put in hand, aud it is now within measurable distance of- completion. In three or four months a double line of railway will connect Wellington and the Hutt, and the Main Hutt Road will be completed throughout to a width of sixty feet. The formation of the twenty-foot' pathway which is to border the road will take a little longer. At present the work is being pushed ahead under advantageous circumstances, the weather conditions being favourable to rapid progress. The double line of permanent way now extends- to the Kaiwarra Hotel, and .(he road formation has been completed to the same point, save whore a big bluff is being cut, down, on the.outskirts of Kaiwarra, to make room for tho widened formation. Over forty men are now working along tho face of tha bliiff, sending down continuous streams of spoil, which is being used in reclamation' works that now extend to tho end of Thorndon Esplanade. From the Kaiwarra Hotel to a point' beyond tho Railway Bridge towards Wellington, a wide space has been reclaimed, which will enable the curve of the new double line to be, greatly eased as compared with that of the old permanent way.. Three now spans aro being added to tho bridge to. afford room for the enlarged roadway, and already fair progress has been made with this particular work. Ono of the new concrete piers required has been completed, and the foundations are in for another. The double line of railway is in operation as far as tho Kaiwarra signal box. Between that point and Wellington a single lino still has to carry all tlie traffic. The formation of the twenty-foot pathway which is to bprder tho finished roadway has been completed from Petono, -to Paparangi Point. The extension of the footpath from this spot towards Kaiwarra is hindered for-the time by the fact that a service Hue used for the conveyance of stone occupies the ground on which the footpath will ultimately lie formed. When completed, this pathway will be not tho least valuable portion of tho improvements now in progress. Twenty feet wide and asphalted, it will extend from Petone to tho outskirts of Wellington, • and will lie available for the use of cyclists as well as of pedestrians. There arc at present about one hundred and fifty men employed on the works, but the number will lie reduced from time to time during the next few months, as the undertaking approaches completion. Floral Art in iti perfection is ceen nt MTSS MURRAY'S. V ice-Regal Florist, Willis Street. Exquisite Baskets. Posies, Bouquets. Floral Designs made of Choicest Flowers.' A special featuro of the firm also is made of decorating for Dinners, At HonJes. Weddings, etc.—Advt "Don't be afrnid," said a mother to her child at a show, "the lion is stuffed." "Very likely," responded the lad, "but perhaps he could find room for a little boy liko me!"
