Weddell and 00. state that, although the demand for lambs in, the provinces continues g6od, the inquiry at Smithflcld was exception,ally quiet during the week, and. with larger quantities offering, all descriptions of lambs ■ were a,-shade easier in'.price. Prime Canterbury lambs under 421b. were selling at 5Jd., and. Southlands and good average quality , North ' Islands of tight-'-weights at about Jdx.less. The heavier: descriptions of lambs, however, wero most difficult of sale, and prime Canterbury lambs 42-50 could' be bought at 5Jd. Eveni at this relatively low quotation it was impossible to move any quantity. Australian mutton was a shade easier, there being many holders anxious to resell their, purchases and take a small profit. Small sheep weroboins sold at Smithlleld at 31d. to 3Jd. in small quantities, and owes at. just, ft fraction less. New Zealand raiittou did not show much change on the .week, but sellers \ did. not hold hard for current quotations.. Canterbury sheep realised 3|d.-to 4d. for the 48-641b. graded the heavier weights selling slowly at 35d. Prime, Wellington brands were quoted at 33d. to 3»d: v and '-'secondaries at , 3Jd. to J!d. Ewes, ivere oniet" at 3d. to' 3}d. River.' Plate sheep were;a slow-sale at Sgd. to 3Sd. Trade in beef had been very quiet during the 'week,,-and values were lower for all 'descriptions. Frozen fores sold with difficulty at 3Jd. to 31d.; and hinds at 4d. to 4Jd.

• COOK ISLAND FRUIT TRADE. . From' the last report on tho Cook Island it is evident that Wellington does a relatively' larger trade than Auckland with tho Island. During the twelve months ended March 31 last, twelve steamers wcre J . cleared lor Auckland carrying in the ag. grcK.itc.s99Btons of fruit, or an average of 600 tons'. per . eteamcr approximately. There were ten steamers to Wellington, tho aggregate being 5075 tons, and the average 507 i tons. > Had Wellington had the same number of steamers the aggregate would have approximated something over 6000 •tone. The trade, with Wellington is steadily cxpandng • notwithstanding that Bupplics are also drawn from Fiji and Now South Wales. .
