. (From Onr .Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, August 2. Messrs. Nairn and . Canton have been appointed to wait on. the Wellington School Commissioners with a view to securing a site, for a new school at the western end of Palmerston. They proceed to Wellington for this purpose tomorrow. There was a largo attendance of members at the usual meeting of Court ilanawatu, A.0.E., last night, X.C.'iU Bro. W. ]?. i'atteu occupying tho chair. The report of the ■ Woodwards showed that' no members were on the sick list. The committee which has the art union in hand reported that arrangements were well forward, and tho prize pictures would, bo' on exhibition in a few days. Two new members were initiated, and two more proposed. . At the conclusion of the business, the euchre tournament was proceeded with. • Tho council of the Mauawatu Philosophical Society met yesterday afternoon, Mr. W. I'. JDurward, president, in the chair. It was decided to allot a prize of £2 2s. to Mr. Leonard Lancaster for his collection of ferns at the' National Dairy Show, which had not been awarded a prize, not' having complied with tho schedule conditions, but which was reported on most favourably by Jlr. T. \V. Kirk. A communication was'received from Sir Robert Stout that the Hector Memorial I'und now reached ,£lOls, ineluding subsidy of .£SOO from the. Government, nnd it was proposed to devote the interest from this sum ■to ■ a-■ prize for research work. Mr. C. K. Hewitt was elected a member. A quantity of routine business was transacted..

Blackbourn, building contractor, and was driven by a man named Moses, who had his back rather badly hurt, besides being considerably bruised. Tho. shaft-horse received severe injuries. A very old. resident of Ashliursl, Mr. John Beard, has passed away at tho age of 76 years. Deceased wae a. resident of Ashhnrst for over thirty years, and, beforo that, he lived in Wellington. A most enjoyable evening was spent with vocal and instrumental music, etc. A long list of new books has just been added to the public library, and these will doubtless be welcomed by readers ot fiction. There was another large attendance at the weekly meeting last night of the local Literary and Debating Society, when a. "mock" meeting of the borough council was held. Various subjects were debated, including the river question, .picture- shows, and tho Beautifying Society, Mr. A. Buchanan filling the role of Mayor. 'Next meeting the question pn de-. bate will be "Freehold v. Leasehold, Messrs. A. E. Clausen and H. J. Canton being the appointed leaders.
