MINING NEWS.
WELLINGTON SHAKE, MAEKET. Waihiß wore firm, and changed hands at £8 ss. It is expected that the Edward lode will be cut in tho course of a fortnight. Talismans were firmer, but Waihi Gruno Junctions, after rising to 405., receded to 38s. Boss Qoldfields opened at 9s. lid. and closed at Bs. 9d., with sellers at- the latter price. With reference to the course adopted by tho Wellington Stock Exchange, as disclosed in the interchange of telegrams' between the Exchange and tho chairman of the Boss Goldfields, Mr. A. T. Bate, tho chairman of the Wellington Stock Exchange, in the course of an interview, sta'ted that tho irrcgularits of tho washing up was one feature. The last three washings took place respectively on Saturday, Sunday ,and Monday. Furthermore, tho withholding or .delay in forwarding official information enables those in touch with the mine to operate on the market either in buying or selling shares before the general body of shareholders or the public can get any news. Nevertheless, there appears to be a leakage oJ information, and there is a feeling, warranted or otherwise, that traffic in tho shares is going on, and this is having an effect on their market value. THAMES DEEP LEVELS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, August 2. Tho driving of tho Thames deep levels cross has been attended by further auspicious results. It will be: remembered that, in April last, when opening out tho chamber at the foot of the Queen of Beauty shaft, preparatory to . starting the drive, a body of "quartz was struck showing the colour of gold. The crosscut,
which is at present penetrating the Government reserve, is now in some 100 ft., and, to-day, the. following message was received from the • manager ot> the May Queen mine:—"Quartz has been cut in'the drill holes in the Government area; deep level crosscut near May Queen boundary." The news is regarded as highly important, and further developments are awaited with interest.
