Reuter's Constantinople agent etates tliat the Porte has ordered a battleship from Armstrong, Wuitirortli and Co., Vickers, Son, and Maxim, and John. Brown and Co. TWO BATTLESHIPS BOUGHT. (Rec. August 2, 11.40 p.m.) Constantinople, August 2. The Government has 'purchased tho German battleships Worth and Brandenburg for .£1,000,000. Germany will accept the sum lying in tho Deutsche Bank to the credit of the deposed Sultan Abdul Hamid as part payment.
The purchase is intended as an offset to tho cruiser Averofi which is to be delivered to Greece in October.
