MINING TROUBLES.

POSITION AT PAPAROA AND BOSS. (By TelcEraph.—Press Association.i Greymouth, August 2. There is no change in tho position of affairs at Paparoa, and the mine is still idle. The miners were prepared to start work on Wednesday morning on condition that the manager deposited tho sum of 2is., the amount to be retunded if Messrs.. Smeatou and Harris, alter inquiry by x director. of tho Paparoa Company, are found guilty of wihul neglect. Mr. Watfion, general manager of the Paparoa mine, in reply, stated that he was prepared to allow work to be resumed and to let Smeaton and Harris, the two suspended men, go to work .with the rest pending a thorough inquiry, which would bo held by a director ot the company, but he could not agree to tho men's proposal to compensate Siueaton and Harris, as ho was already giving amplo concession in permitting them to resume work under the circumstances. This evening the mine managor reports that he has hoard nothing further from the men, and it is not likely work will be resumed to-morrow.

Hokitika, AugMst 2.. A settlement of the demands mado upon the Boss Goldficlds, Ltd., by the miners has not yet been arrived at. Three workmen, representing those employed in the mine, attended a special' meeting of the directors held at Hokitika to-day, when tho latter reviewed the matters in dispute, with the result that an ultimatum was submitted by tho company covering the maximum concession to be granted tho men. No further information is available.
