In the course of his speech Sir • Joseph gave- some interesting statistics, showing the expansion of the work of tho Auckland Post Office from the early uays 1 of 1841. Messrs. Poole, Myers, andfcriovcr, M.P.'s, also spoke. The contractors foi the building are Messrs. J. and \V. Jamie' soil, Ltd., of Christchurch, the contrac/ prico being ,£95,5Ut1. CETACEAN. COMES ASHORE. Ashburton, August I, A. living whale, twenty feet in length, • was washed ashore opposite the anglers' huts at the mouth of the Eakaia Biver . on Sunday. Three boys cut their initials in the blubber, establishing prima fack .■ evidence of ownership. This morning, ■ however, the whale had disappeared.
