TRADE WITH CANADA.
ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST STEAMER. The New Zealand Shipping Company are the contractors for the new East Canadian service, having entail into a three years' contract with the Canadian jGovernment to load steamers from Eastern Canadian ports to Australia and New Zealand. The subsidy paid by Canada is. £24,000 per annum, and the conditions ■ are that' the steamers shall be dispatched monthly. No provision is made for the return voyage,the vessels being free to load back to London or anywhere else so long as they leave Canada for Australasia every month. The Canadian port of departure in tho summer months is Montreal, and in the winter St. John (New Brunswick). The Rakaia, the pioneer vessel (now at Auckland), which loaded at Montreal, brought a fairly large quantity of cargo for Australia and New Zealand. Eor New Zealand ports she has altogether .1100 tons of cargo to discharge, which- will be distributed as follows:—Auckland and Wellington each 350 tons, and Lyttclton and Dunedin each 200 tons. The principal lines of tho Auckland cargo consist of .3000 barrels of nails, a quantity-of paper, carbide of calcium, ngricultnr<il uiaeliiiicrj and sundries. Tho southern portion is nearly all made up of machinery and small lines of American samples. • The next steamer engaged in the neiv trade due to arrive at Auckland via ports is tho Wh'akatanc,' which left Montreal on Juno 17. She should put in an appearance in Auckland, "about August 26. Tho Wakanui, the third steamer, was listed ,to leave Montreal oh the loth of this month, but so far no word has yet been received advising her departure.
