ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOOTBALL. - RUCBY MATCHES TO-DAY. With but threo morn Saturdays to go the senior championship of the l<ugby Union is in a very interesting position, ami tho matches to be played from now on should provido contests of more than average keenness. Tho four leading teams meet at the park this afternoon, viz., St. James versus PcnoUe, and Oriental versus Athletic. The results of .these matches will havo a considerable bearing on the final result, so that followers of tho game should witness some of the best games olVtho year. LOSS ON MAORI TOUR. It is understood that tho tour of tho Maori Rugby football team through Australia and New, Zealand has so far resulted in a loss of £200 to the promoter. It is thought, however, that the net proceeds from tho match today iu Auckland, Auckland v. Maori team, will wipe out a largo portion of the deficit. ASSOCIATION GAMES. \ There will only be one senior fixture in town this afternoon—the RoversRamblers match, which will bo played at Kelburno Park. This match is causing a good deal of interest, seeing that Ramblers aro leading for the championship, and if beaten to-day will have to play off with Diamonds for tho coveted trophy. Tho. two other'lixtures, Swifts v. Thistle and Diamond;! v. Y.M.0.A., will be played at Miramar.

A fast and interesting exhibition of lacrosse should result this afternoon at the Basin Reserve in the match between the representative team selected to -play at Auckland on August fi, ■and the "next best" fourteen. G. Watchorn (Manawatu) was awarded the gold medal presented by the Manawatu Boxing Association for the most scientific boxer in the recent tourney.

At the conclusion of the Now Zealand championships at Palmerston last night, the delegates 'from the local associations, who had mot in conference, were entertained at supper by tho Manawatu Association. Dr. O'Brien occupied the chair. A number of toasts wore honoured, and a pleasant ovening was passed. C. GRIFFIN IN AMERICA. The London "Sportsman" says that at New York on June 8 the bell saved Australian Charley Griffin ' from a knock-out in the second round. Bant Dorsey, of Albany, floored him with a right-hand punch-.. to tho jaw, and Griffin was helpless on tho mat when the referee had tolled off the count of five. With rare gameness ho canio back and lasted the limit. Dorsey also scored a knock-down in the tenth, and drove Griffin all round the ring with' a series of right-hand punches.

ROWING

THE WELLINGTON CLUB.

The annual meeting of the Wellington lowing Club was to have been held last evening, but only twenty members out ot about ■ eighty wore present, and as twenty-five constitute a quorum, tho meeting consequently lapsed. It was decided to holfl it next Friday, August 5. The annual report to be submitted by the secretary (Air. W. A. Gemmcll) mentions that crews from the club-com-peted at Wellington, Picton, and Napier .Regattas, and were placed in tho following events:—Second, senior double sculls, Wellington Kogatta; second, junior fours, Napier; second, maiden fours, Napier; second, maiden double sculls, Napier; third maiden pairs, third junior pairs, third junior double sculls, third junior fours, Picton. Tho increase in club membership for tho year was ten. The committee announce that the plant is in good order, and at present is being cleaned and overhauled. They would like to see more members assisting to put tho boats in order for the coming season. The committee expresses its thanks to tho Star Boating Club for the loan' of a sculler for Napier liogatta, Messrs. M'Lean and Sons for loan of punt for swimming sports, and also Mr. J. Trevor for donation £2 25., Mr. J. G. W. Aitkeu £1 Is., and Mr. W. Hulbort £1. The thanks of the , club were also. duo to Mr. H. A.

Jl'Kinley and Mr. A. Quale for repairs to plant, Mr. Bishop for coaching crews, and the various regatta crows who attended regattas at tlieir own expense. The committee record with regret the deatli of a very old representative member, Mr. Angus Ai'Alpine. The statement of assets over liability's showed a balance of £831 18s. 3d.

BOWLS,

TERRACE END CLUB. Tlie annual general meeting ot members of the Terrace End (Palmerston) Bowling Club was hold this week. Mr. A. Turner presided. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The latter showed the club to bo in a sound financial position. Twelve new members were elected, and the following officers appointed for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. R. Gardner; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Turner, R. Sollitt, and AV. Adams; committee, Messrs. B. Martin, V. Sollitt, A. AY. Thompson, A. J'. Zortt, and H. Sinclair; treasurer, Mr. AV. Mundy. Special reference was made to the. splendid work done by the secretary, Mr. B. Martin, and a bonus of five guineas was voted to him as a small recognition of his services. Green and Social Committees were set up, but the election of a Match Committee was left over. Mr. E. Toms was appointed delegate' to the North Island Bowling Association. It was decided to open the tennis courts next season.
