HOROWHENUA MATTERS.

DEPUTATION Tp HON E. .M'KENZIE. Some matters affecting residents of i-orowhenua county were brought under ■S? , not / !ce of the Jlil >ister of Public Works (Hon. M. M'Kenzie), on Wednesday, by a deputation from the County Council,, consisting of Messrs. Watson (ciiamnan of the council) and Malcolm (county engineer). It was pointed out that a proposal was made by the county some years ago to close a road at Muhunoa, near Oliau, which was found impracticable to work, and to substitute for it a more direct and satisfactory route. Considerable inconvenience had been caused to a large number of settlers since Departmental objection was raised to the proposed exchange. The Minister agreed that it would be to the best interests of the district to accede to the wishes of the council in tin; matter. Another matter brought forward by tho deputation was the withholding- of the subsidy promised last year for the Tan-agatii Bridge across the Otaki Eiver. The bridge had recently been erected, but the Departmental engineer reported that ■some alterations were necessary before tho subsidy could be paid. It was arranged that the county engineer should report upon his proposals in connection with the Department's requirements, after which the whole matter would' be reconsidered.
