(»y Toleiraph.—Suecial "CorresDonfleDt.l Wanganui, July 28. At the annual meeting of tho Wanganui Orphanage subscribers Messrs.* "W. J. Treadwell and W. 6. Bassett were elected t<i the vacancies on the Board of Trustees. A committee was set up to go into tho matter of enlarging the accommodation at the home. . . . . The Wanganui East Borough Council held a special meeting lust night to further consider proposals for the new traffic bridge. It was finally resolved to take tho necessary steps for a poll of ratepayers on a loan proposal for ,£17,200 of which .£11,509 is tor the bridge, and .£5700 for extending the borough tramway track across the river. So far the suburb is without a drainage scheme, but. it is understood that this matter will be pushed ahead as soon as the bridge question is out of the way.

At the annual meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club last evening Dr. K. C. Earle was elected president, Mr. H. N. Harrison vice-president, Mr. E. A. Campbell chairman of committee, and Mr. J. P. Cutfield was elected to succeed the late Mr. J. H. Nixon as treasurer.

During the year ended June 30, only sixteen fires Imve ocenrred in Wanganui. The value of the properties affected was .£22,800 and the loss to the insurance companies £6*90, the comparatively small amount of the latter item being undoubtedly due to the excellent work of the volunteer brigade. The brigade has sent an order Home for a motor horse reel, to cost ii'looo, which should prove very useful for service at outlying fire , '
