A WELLINGTON BARITONE.
MR, JOHN WtOUSE IN SYDNEY. After an enjoyable holiday in Sydney, Mr. John Prouse, the well-known Wellington .baritone, arrived homo ugain by the Ulimaroa on Wednesday. During the course of a brief conversation with a representative of The Dominion, Mr. Prouse, referring (o the Dolores Concerts in Sydney, said that the great singer had been received with unbounded outhusiusm by the huge audiences which attended the recitals..."The season of three concerts had !o be increased (o six, and tliare was an audience of at least 3000 at Iho final recital," said Mr. Prouse. .
"It has always been a pleasure for me to sing in Sydney," he continued. "I don't know why, but I fwjl as much at homo thero as in Wellington. Probably 'it-is because Mdlle. Dolores enthuses her audiences to such an extent with her first group of songs that if is easy work for anyone to follow. Din-ing her season Mdlle. Dolores's programme items consisted of 7S numbers, increased, by encores, to 110; from this great repertoire only_ six were repeated, aiid those by special request. My task in comparison was light, but I ]m<l to give iut enciicu number to every song or group of songs. "What astonished me most at the recitals wiia Hie enthusiasm of the Sydney ladies. At tho matinee performance ninetenths of the audience were composed of the fair sex, und they insisted on encore?, to nearly every item. Afier the recital was over they lined the sides of the kail and stops'ebeering the artist as she passed to her carriage. Their delight is to take away a. small souvenir in. the shape of a' Ilowur from one-of the many ilor'al tributes given on such occasions. I was entrusted with a beautiful basket of flowers, but.only succeeded in handing the stripped framework into Mdllc.'s carT)a.<?e. ;
"During my stay in Sydney, 1 Faw that charming play of Barrie's, 'What Every Woman Knows.' and also 'The Passing cf : the "Third Moor Back,' which, 1 ii:ii Kirry to say, will not be staged in New Zealand. It is a most striking piece, and beautifully acted. I also attended a performance of the Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mr: Bradley, 'and another by the Amateur .Orchestral Society conduct-' ed by Herr Slapoffski. Both of these concerts were well attended, and it was .delightful co" Jie.'ii- mioh exceliem orchestral music. I am pleased to learn there is a possibility of our hearing such music performed in Wellinslon by a municipal orchestra," concluded the speaker.
