Out of'twenty-five applicants, Mr. J. i ft 1 ' 0 e *Wing, lias been appointed by tho committee of the Feilding Jockej Club to the position of caretaker of the racecourse, vice Mr. Jackman.

Considering the - slack .season of fclis year, thewinter fete organised 'by' tha~ local Methodist Church—for. the purpose of raising funds to improve the church building-and grounds must "be-pronounced a success. Mr.-P. Hairs,; in the un-a.void-able absence of Mr. Stiles, the Mayor of. Foxton, declared . the fete open. .The Druids' Hall was tastefully decorated, and presented .a bright and animated scene ou Friday _and . Saturday evenings. Tha. Misses Kewth presided at the lolly stall, , and the stage was transformed into a teaToom. A glee party, whose members bad been practising assiduously of late, contributed- glees :and part songs. -Mrs. Boyes and Miss Signal sang solos, and duets were sung by Miss Signal and Mr.* liimmer, Foxton, and by ISTiss Laurvig and Mr. Saunders. The principal feature of Saturday night's entertainment was a camp-fire scene, in which members of. the Literary and Debating Society, took part. Mr. G. H. Gibb, J. E. Langclan, and others contributed items, ;.although it was reserved for Mr.- W. Clayton to make the "hit" of the evening by. his humorous recitations. Miss E. Smith and Miss Laurrig contributed solos in, a very acpepfcable manner. To Mr. E,'J. Judd and Mr. A. Saunders was largely due the success of the fete.- About .£33 was cleared.
Mr. Byron Brown lectured .under tha auspices, of the Literary and Debating Society in the Druids- Hall on Tuesdaynight, "whoa tli-er-e :v;ere about eighty of the public present.. His subject was: "The Financial Aspect of Prohibition," and on the conclusion of liis address a desultory discussion took place. Subsequently Mr. Brown, by request, gave.a recitation. Mr. G. H. Gibb presided.

One of the. most successful school. con< . certs ever held in the district took placo last Friday evening. In spite of the unfavourable weather the school was packed,all seating accommodation being taken,, lip, and a number had to be content with , standing room.-. ; Visitors came from Otaki,'. I Paraparaumu, Waikanae, and Marton. , ; Mr.-.-W. D. Bennett (head teacher) and- ' Miss K. Jamisoii (assistant teacher) do-: ' serve special mention for. the manner in which they had trained the children, ind". overy item was gone through without a'.'. hitch. The local orchestra (Miss M, Stubbings, Messrs. G. Stubbings; ' G. \ Kemsley, and R. Stubbings) also con- • tributed an effective part of the pro. - gramme. At the conclusion, Mr. A. Neilson (on behalf of tho committee) " thanked those coming from a long distance on such a rough night. After the . concert the room was cleared for dancing, ■ for which the music was supplied by the . Reikorangi Orchestra, Misses Corrior, Baker, and Mr. Baker playing extras.
