INTEREST JN SKATING.
The increasing, popularity of the Lower Hutt Skating .Rink has ■ induced . the management to open every afternoon and evening, with the exception of Tuesday evenings. Every night crowds of onskaters are in evidence, to tho accompaniment of a brass band. The rink is conducted on first-class lines, there being times sot apart for learners, couples, and ladies and goiitlemun wpaiately. To meet tho' requirements of private partics, thu rink is available on Thursdays and .Fridays. . After the success of tiio two preceding carnivals, the management announce that a "grand carnival" will be held on AVednesday, August 10, when the great attraction will be Professor Athos, tho king of staters, who will givi exhibitions of tho "Ice Waltz," "Cobblers' Dance," "Two Step," "Threading the Forest Maize," huni'an sVing, "too spins,'' and other feats. His star turn will be a leap over sixteen ohaii;s, turning a somersault whilst in mid-air'. Table leaping will also.be included in the performance.
At tho Petnne Police Court yesterday, before Mr. E.. Mothes, J.P., one first offending inebriate (who did not appear), was .ordered to forfeit his bail, lUs. The second dunce in connection with the private assembly series was held in the Victoria Street Hal'.,' Potone,' last evening. A' largo number ot guests were present, and a very doligbtlul evening, was spent. The promoters were Misses Coverhill (2), Atlendar, and Stcmpa (2). The Hope of I'btone Lodge of Good Templars met in force at the Rnnfurly Hull, Petone, last evening, for their wecidy sesr) OVL ' ,? r ,°- W - Dcnby, C.T., presiding, liros.li. Kyle and W. Denby were elected as captains of sides for nest.term. • Six new members were initiated, and sevorul proposed. Tho election of officers for tho ensuing quarter resulted as follows ;-G.T., Sister Fuller; V.T., Sister.A. Smith; secretary, Bro. 6. Rose; financo secretary, Bro. -E. ITontgomery; treasurer,- Bro. J. Kerslako; chaplain, Sister Kerslako; marshal, Bro; M'DonaWj guard, Bro. G. Kyle; sentinel, Sister Whiting; pianist, Sister li. MillwordjD.M.,. Sister Bomgreen; asBro. Tilbury. A letter from the Prime Minister, was read, stating that tho legislative demands of tho temperance party were under consideration, and thanking thi lodge for forwarding a resolution. A visit to Johnsonville was arranged for Tuesday, and a basket party for Friday.
