WELLINGTON-LYTTELTON FERRY.

STATE OWNEKSHII' ADVOCATED, Among tlie proposals made to tbc Prime Minister yesterday by the Trades and Labour Conference was one to the effect that the State should acquire the ferry service between Wellington and Lyttelton. Sir Joseph Ward stated that he had previously announced that tho Government was favourable to the State owning tho service, and it had not changed its views on the subject. There was, however, strong opposition' in tho House to the proposal. It had to be remembered that the project would involve a considerable amount of money. Still it was only a matter of time when tho Government would own its own' ferry service. 'l'Ue great railway systems were bound to bo connected by their own steamers. for his own part, he believed it would -be a good and proper thing for this country. It would, however, be impossible to undertake the project at the present time, because the State was doing a groat deal already. They must not forget that there was a limit as to how much this country; could stand within a reasonable time in tie way of borrowed money.
