the reports by Mr. T. H. Gill (Inspector under the Education Department), ,on the condition and progress pi the district high schools at Levin, Fahiatua, 'ireytown, and Carterton were hud on the table at the- meeting of the Wellington Education Board yesterday, Mr. A. H. Viio asked whether it was not fie custom of the board's own inspectors vo visit these district high schools.. Ho wo-i answered in the affirmative. •Mr. Vile: Then why Mr. Gill? My attention was drawn to .this unnecessary and expensive duplication of the work o'; our own inspectors quite recently. Is there any reason for it? .

Mr. Allaii inquired how the reports of the board's inspectors compared with those prepared by the' Department's inspector. The reply was that they compared very well. ' Mr. Aitken: Do they coincide on the main points? , ' The chairman: Tes.

Mr. Hogg: I'm. sure it is very good of the Department to furnish inspectors free of charge. . Mr. Vile: It is an expense to the conn-
