GRANTS SOUGHT.. •Requests for grants in aid of the IKaratane Home at Dunedin and the Plunket Nurses in various parts of the Dominion were made to tho Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) by a large deputation yesterday. Mr. Sidey,'H.P..,.who introduced the deputation, said that its members wished the Government. to renew tho annual grant'of £500 for ,the_ Karatane Home and £50 . subsidy , to each Plunket Nurse in New Zealand. Ho handed Sir Joseph Ward the society's publication, on tho health of women and children, which .he'said .had- beeil described ,us the best thing' of its kind ' in .the, English language; The Karatane,Home' ■was, he added, the training ground for ■the Plunlset Nurses, of whohl there; were thirteen in New Zealand. He combated the suggestion .that s the Karatane Homo should .be brought : under the Hospital and, Charitable Aid Board,' as that would bo a death-blow to'the whole institution, which was not purely a 'charitable institution, but ■ had : an education value as weli. There ■ were 600 members ■ connected witlr the Society for the Promotion of the Health 'of Women and .Children, in Dunedin, and the. amount subscribed locally was very considerable .'The cost of the Plunket .Nurses was, however, £200 per annum each, and he urged the Government to rnako the £50 grant for. each . nurse an annual one. . . . .
Mrs. Uafr (Dune'din) said Mr. Sidey had explained, the whole matter very fully, but she would be glad to-answer airy question the Prime Mjnister-.wished to' put. '.'-■ -.. Sir .Joseph' Ward said he had no questions to \ask, ..as lie Was familiar •with the. position, generally. ;■■ . '; Mrs: Carr added that,. though , the work,of the society might not yet be apparent in the statistics, shefelt sure that in ten years they would lie able to show,a,reduced mortality as,the direct result of the work . the society was doing. In conclusion, she advocated the teaching of hygiene in the schools.'
'Mr. Poole, M.P., read a'letter from Mrs. Parkes (Auckland), regarding^the necessity for' a Government grant. J1 therewero.no grants this year she. stated that the scheme .would receive a Eet-baclL' . ■'.'■., . ';', ..,...,..
Mr. .Thomson, M.P., said the Ihvercafgill Society -would bo prepared to provide '.£7O if the subsidy,.was-again voted this" y'e'ai.' ■ • ■ Mr. Okcy, M.P., said the New' Plymouth Society could not'earry. oh without a subsidy. ■.'.
Mr. T. E.- Taylor, M.P., said the work of the society was being : increasingly appreciated, and would become more valuable every year, until' the time airived when' girls would he given- the information it was necessary they should have as part of their ordinary school course. After the fourth standard; he thought' girls' teaching should be distinctly in - this direction: Until that 1 time- arrived the work of-the' institution: would be very valuable. ' ..
.Messrs.; Ell, M.P., and Russell, M.P., supported the application. ' , •Sir Joseph Ward said that .though" the vote did not appear, upon this year's' Estimates, it must not be inferred that the' Government did not. intend to do ; anything. • They- were, how v ever, desirous'of ascertaining the'total amount of the Government expenditure involved in tliis and similar schemes before deciding what the vote would bespeaking generally, he could say that -the Government was favourable to the work being carried on by the Karatane . Home .arid the Plunket Nurses, but in regard to training homes like. Karatane they wanted to bo sure that the request for', a subsidy should he limited to one place, because a short time ago they were told there was • a desire that the system should be extended. The Government was not favourable to repeating the vote in other parts of the country. They, wanted to guard against duplicating or even quadrupling a.system that could be carried out in one home. Therefore, the Karatane Homo only was before the Government for consideration in connection with the Supplementary Estimates. With regard to the Plunket Nurses, the Government would continue to.subsidise them on the, basis of the previous year's grant, and with a limitation as to the number as intimated last year. They might depend upon a .renewal of that vote this year. With regard to there being an amalgamation of tin. Plunket Nurses 'with the district nursing scheme, tho Minister '■ for Internal Affairs and the Minister for Public Health were now considering that matter. Their proposals would not, however, be hastily formulated, and people interested would have an opportunity of making representations . regarding them. The Government was anxious to do what it could in improving .the position of women in this country. • The' work of tho' society would no doubt in course of time have a beneficial effect.
