GRAND TRUNK STRIKE

RIOT IN ONTARIO. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Ottawa, July 24. Sympathisers with the Grand Trunk railway strikers, urged by women, mobbed tho strike-breaking crew of a freight train at Brockville, Ontario.' The Riot Act was read*and a company of militia quelled tho disturbance! . Mr. Hays, president of the Grand' Trunk, declares that tho strike is broken. ARBITRATION PROPOSED. (Rec. July 25, 11.20 p.m.) Ottawa, July 25. Efforts are being mailo to induce the Grand Trunk railway, strikers to agreo to tho reference of tho dispute to a Canadian-American board of arbitration. THE WABASH TROUBLE. New York, July 24, Train men at the Wabash line will resumo work on Tuesday next. FORTY PER CENT. INCREASES ASKED. Writing on Juno 17, tho Canadian correspondent of "Th* Times" said:—"The Board of Conciliation appointed under the Lomioux .lot has thus tar tailed to adjust relations between the Grand Trunk and the Canadian Pacific Railway Companies and th'tdr workmen. Generally the Canadian Pacific employees ask for an 'increase of 23 per cent, in their wages, whilo the Grand Tiunk stall' are asking for an advance of ■40 per cent., which would bring the wages up to those paid by the former company. For many years the scale of wages on the Grand Trunk line has been lower than on the Canadian Pacific. Tho liailway Union hold that tho time Ijas come when wages upon all railways in the United States and Canada should be standardised. It is understood that the Canadian Pacific Company is. ready to give the greater part of the increase demanded, and it is probable that, rather than strike, tho men will accept. tho company's offer. The Grand Trunk authorities, however, feel that they cannot, alford the large increase demanded, and. suggest a gradual increase to be spread over a sertes of years until ultimately the wages equal those of the Canadian Pacific. It is frankly admitted that a strike is imminent."
