MR. TRIGGS AND THE SHEARERS.
ALLEGED SUGGESTION DENIED (By Telegr&ph.-Press Association.)
Christchurch, July 25. Mr. Triggs, Conciliation Commissioner, to-day said that lie knows nothing of the suggestions which he was supposed to have made in regard to the settlement .of the shearers' dispute. What he suggested was that representatives of the two parties should sign a joint requisition to the Minister for Labour requesting him to appoint the three commissioners. to" visit certain localities to be agreed upon, and ascertain what were fair-rates of pay and conditions suitable for. a Dominion award. Tho commissioners, as a result of these inquiries, should then file a recommendation to the court, and both parties should enter into a compact in writing to abide, by the award and not to take steps, during thei currency of the award, to prevent workers engaging at the prices fixed. Mr. Triggs suggested that one commissioner should be.appointed a special commissioner for the occasion, and_ the other two assessors for the parties. This, he said, would, be in accordance with the Act.
[Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of the New Zealand Emp'loy ers ' .Federation, received the following telegram from Mr. Triggs, Conciliation Commissioner for the "South Island, yesterday:—"Mr. Laracy's proposal to the Minister not my' suggestion. Know nothing of it. First intimation I.' had -was in morning papers. Must have undertaking signed' by both parties as suggested by you." ' Mr. Pryor l<|ft for Christchurch last evening to appear for the shocpfarmers in the Arbitration Court.]
