FOR HEROISM.

AN HONOUR YET TO COME.

On Friday last a cable message from London was published stating that the Order 'of St. John of Jerusalem had awarded a certificate of honour'to William Hayes, a railway shunter-at Lytteltoii, for horoism. Appended to the messagi) was a Press Association telegram from Christchurch, stating tiat, the item of news was , about three months out of and continued: "The certificate has been in Mr. Hayes's possession for a considerable'time, and tho fact that it had buon granied to him was announced last May." The positive tone of the message from Christchurch will hardly survive the following letter by the person most intimately concerned—Mr William Haves, shunter, of Taihape, late of Lytteltoji. He writes:—. ■

■ "Sir, —I noticed in your publication of even date (July 22) a statement to the effect that tho certificate of honour of St. John of Jerusalem has been in my possession for some considerable time. 1 beg to_ state, sir, that this statement is absolutely incorrect, as I have neither received such nor have

I any knowledge of when *the presentation is likely to take place." On this evidence there is little doubt that Mr. Hayes has yet to receive the proposed honour.
