MASTERTON NOTES.

DEFECTIVE TRAIN SERVICE. (From Our Special Correspondent.). Masterton, July 25. About twenty applications have been received' for the position of -matron of the Masterton Hospital, in succession to Miss Roberts. These applications have come'from all .parts of the Dominion. Tho appointment will probably' be made by the Hospital Board 'on. August' 3, on tho the Hospital Trustees. Mr. C. R. C. Robicson, manager oV tho State Fire Department, has been visiting Masterton during the.last day or two. Early Morning Train. Tho reply of the Minister for Railways to the question asked by tho member for Masterton in the House of Representatives to the effect that the early morning train was'leaving Cross Creek instead of Wellington, to enable "Wairarapa settlers to proceed to Falmerston North and return on the same day, has given .'great dissatisfaction. An early morning' train from' Wellington is of far.greater importance .to tho whole of tho, district than a connection with Palmorston North, which does not enablo settlers in- the district to attend the stock sales in-.that place and return tho samo day.' What is really required 'is an early morning train from Wellington, and a train leaving Master-, ton for Palmerston at, say, six o'clock in the morning. Tho Minister., stated that there has been a long-sustained agitation for a train servico from Cross Creek to Palmerston .North. Assuming-, that such'an agitation were made—and few people have heard of it—it was certainly never contemplated or desired that such a connection would be made at the-expense of the early train from Wellington. ■ ' Tho latest "record-breaker" is a young pianist, who has announced his intention of playing th'o piano continuously for 63 hours in the Masterton Town Hall. Impending Poll. Great interest is being.manifested ili the poll which is aboiit to bo taken on a,proposal to raiso a loan of £31,000 loi tho extension of the -borough sewage system. On tho one hand it is".maintained that the health of tho community a-s a whole demands that we should have, comprehensive and effective, sewago. On the it is thought that the time is not ripo.fc-r the.imposition of so largo a burden upon the ratepayers.

•As yet, nothing definite appears to have been doiie in the direction of providing a. now Court-house for Masterton. Plans for a- proposed building have been prepared, but the money for the _ work does not yet appear to bo available.

■There is at present a scarcity of firewood in Masterton, and residents are. in consequence, suffering privations. lii most of the local yards not a stick of wood can be purchased. An abnormal demand has been created by the excessively cold -weather of' tho past few weeks,, and supplies have unexpectedly run out.

The funeral of the lato Mrs. Jacob Mathews took place on Sunday, and was attended by a large number of old settlers. It is somewhat of a coincidence that the deceased lady passed away in tho very house in which she first lived when she cauio to Masterton over fifty years ago. Coach Accident. - A narrow oscapo from a possible fatality ' occurred on tho treacherous Lower Taueru Road on Saturday afternoon. Tho horses attached to tho mail coach, driven by' Mr; George Daysh, suddenly took fright, .and swerved. The driver was thrown on to the "road, and sustained concussion of the brain. Tho horses careered along tho road for some distance .before boing brought to a -standstill. The passengers on the coach .were considerably alarmed, and got out 'on to the road with the utmost expedition. Mr. Hugh Morrison, who was passing in- his motor-car, brought Mr. Daysh in to Masterton, whero ho received medical attention, and is now making satisfactory progress.

A football match !>etwepn teams representing North and South AVairarapa will be- played at Maslcrton on Saturday next. The following teams have been' selected:—North: E. Mason, Thompson, K. Welch, Nitz, E. Douglas, Hon Ratima, Ball, R. M'Kenzie, Allen, Johnson, AYard, Miller, Hodge, Norman,'Ross; emergencies, AV. Morris, P. M'Lachlan. South: Masson, Sheet, P. Rodgors, Baskeville, C. Oroube, N. M'Kenzie, R. Groube, Callistcr, Barry, Hastings, M'Kenzie, Bond, Blake, 0. Skcot, Desmond; emergencies; AV. Skeot, J. Skcet, Cadwallader,

The Lata Miss Sutherland,

It is told of the late Miss Solina Sutherland, "the Florenco Nightingale of Australasia," to whoso memory , a tablet was unveiled in tho Masterton Hospital on Saturday, that on one occasion, whilst residing in this district, .an outbreak of typhoid-'fever occurred

in a roadmen's camp in the neighbour* hood of'Alfredto'n. "Miss Sutherland, at considerable personal risk and inconvenience, proceeded to the camp and nursed- the.men until thenvhole of them' —six or' eight in number —had ro.cov ered. '■■.•■ - ~ Several inquiries have recently been made for properties' in 'the Masterton district;. and .one or two sales are reported,. The depression which has existed for ' some months : appears 'to bo steadily lifting. Tho Rev. C. E. Porter, who las re* signed his charge- of the ' Wesleyan Methodist Church in Masterton,. will preach his farewell sermon on Sunday" next. -Mr. Porter is .applying for a'dmission to the Presbyterian ministry.. The pulpit at the AYesleyan Methodist Church will bo - filled (until a permanent minister is appointed in February next) by Mr: Olds, senior student in' the Methodist College.
