KAWHIA DISTRICT AND TOWN.
Sir, —Kawhia is not sufficiently well known to bo appreciated by outsiders. When Kawliia becanic a European settlement numbers 'of people who had never mado both ends meet went there as such people always shift about, looking for a placc where laziness and incompetence are rewarded; they, must stay there until they are superseded by a better class and shift again. Many liavo already left these places, being taken by a more advanced class. This trouble is gradually being squeezed out. Kawhia-lias 30ft., on the. outside bar, which has a lift, spring tide, giving 40ft. at'springs. The bar is only a narrow ledge of rock, easily deepened by blasting. Inside the bar there arc six to eight fathoms to the wharf. The entrance can be worked in all weather, tho harbour being used as a haven of safety by scows and othor sailing vessels, in storms. Given a railway to the main line, Kawhia 'would jump into prominence, as intercolonial steamers would save time, compaved with Auckland. . Kawhia is tho .natural- port of a largo area inland, and will do most o f tho° distributing, freezing, and shipping from its outlying lands. As an outlet by sea for tho timber on the Main Trunk, it • would savo freight charges considerably. Those who know tho future of Kawhia, its soil analysis, rich in potash and nitrogen; those who' have by patient toil and privation, battling against adverso laws, battling to secure Native areas against tho lieavy expense necessary on account of obsolete Native Courts, laws, etc., know they have.chosen the best,'most-
healthy, and moderate climate in tint Dominion. Sheep keep fat all the year. With the most ordinary intelligent in management thoy thrive hotter than southern sheep fed threo months on turnips,' although • the sheep hero get no feed but the natural grass. -Horse* anil cattle also "do well all the ycir on the grass. Otago breeders of Clydcc•lales have proved the immense saving in winter feed, and aro launching out •>u ii largo scale to rear pure Clydesdale stock.
Those who composc tho settlers aie Me" hardy, honest, out-back class, who make stepping-stones of obstacles fatal U) softer ami weaker-willed men' from "whs. These _ hardy pioneers are al! from tlio south;'so far the imieh-praisr-d Auckland lias not contributed one wayback settler, Aucklanders being of that ■:!ass who prefer to live .011 these hardy pioneers, aiid spout labour and Socialism. Yes, we are mostly the sons of our •Scotch fathers from tho land of cakes. Wo.are only getting a start now, but liold 011 until our pcoplo sottle Auckland province, and all Nativo land has nlowly. but surely come to us. We shall then let our votes be felt at election time, for tho benefit of those on the land. Wo don't get a chance now. Most consideration is given by Government to labour unions, becauso they aro united. We are not. When we ;iro we are much in the. majority. Those elected by tho labour miions pander to their wants at our expense, because they can't see we are tho class who supply 'most of the money to pay their wages. Without us they would starve; by not going with us, and helping us, they hurt themselves as well as us, as v.'e aro all members of one body, one people. Internal political strife can only delay our onward progress. Kawliia, .with all the'north, is suffering and being held back by want of unity amongst all our workers on land or water. When Iwo get our rights attended to, railways made, etc., we sliall advance, as Sir Joseph Ward says, "by leaps and bounds." -Our city, will hi one of tho largest and best in,tho Do-minion.—-I am, etc., NEW CHUM.
