At the annual mooting of tlio Manavcatu Licensed Victuallers' Association the balaiice-shcot showed a flourishing state of affairs. Tiio following officers wore elected —President, Mr. W. Tho prize schedule for the first show of the National Sweet Pea Society of New Zealand, to be held at Palmerston in December next, is being framed. A draft copy of the schedule has been forwarded to Mr. A. C. Bradfield, of Poimerston North, who is tiie local representative on the committee, and a perusal of it shows that there will lie no lack of encouragement to growers to compete. -The Manawatu district challenge cup is to lie the big prize of the show, and will be awarded for tho open championship. It is valued at 25 guineas. There are two or three other challenge cups as well. An important diversion in the schedulo is that devoted to tho encouragement of varieties produced in the Dominion. It is expected that there will bo an immense display of sweet peas, as over five hundred blooms have been promised from Auckland alone.

The Works Committee of the Palmerston Borough has instructed the engineer to immediately carry out certain work in connection with the river erosion which occurred in the recent floods.

An interesting paiver on wool-classing, prepared by Mr. U. J. Wilson, of Johnsonville, was read at' tho Palmerston Technical School on Friday evening. Mr. Wilson-was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the paper, which was the first of a series which is to be read at tho wool-classing division at this school.
