6 COMPULSORY SCHEME. (By Teleer&ph.—Press Association.) 'Auckland, July 23. The Trades and Labour Conference has unanimously adopted the following recommendation by a special committee appointed to consider the best scheme for getting compulsory preference to unionists:—"That tlic conference ask that the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. should be amended to enable unions to strike off their books any member thrra months in arrears; that preference be granted to financial members of unions; "that unions be, asked to amend their rules accordingly." A further resolution asked for an amendment of the Act providing thnt an award of the Court should apply to all employers in any ouo industry, without making it compulsory to cite every individual employer before the Court. It was resolved to ask tho Government to carry on public works by day labour instead of by the co-operative system, which was described as inequitable. The conference protested against the Government assisting domestic workers into the Dominion. . It was agreed that the Otago Council should be the fj.flciitho for next year. The next -conference will be held at. Christcliurch.
