"Spurgcon's Poplar," a tree on Clapham Common, is now in a precarious condition. During a thunderstorm 50 years ago a gardener who had taken refuge under its branches was struck dead. On the following Sunday Mr. Spurgeon ureached on the, spot and collected a, substantial sum to ilio .victim's family.
