TOO "HIGH CHURCH" FOR SYDNEY.
: A PROTEACTED DEADLOCK. The Rev. W. I. Carr-Smith, formerly of St. James's Anglican Church, King Street, Sydney, whose nomination was rejected by the Synod nominators for St. James 3, though the parish nominators desired his return to the rectorship of that church, has been offered tho position -of diocesan niistiouer by the Archbishop of Melbourne. I'rior to the offur by tho Archbishop of Melbourne, an invitation by the Bishop of Ballarat had bi>en given to Mr.•CarrSmith • to fill a similar position m the dioceso of Ballarat. Canon' Wise, of Adeluido (whose nomination was also rejected by the Synod nominators for St. James's,"Sydney). »"s received by cable nn offer of the benefice of St. Saviour s, Poplar, London, whero Father Dolling, who did suoii splendid work among tlw poorest of tho poor, laboured fur many years. Both Canon Wiso and Mr.. CarrSmith were considered too High Church for the Sydney diocesan nominators. The s;ime remark applies to the Eev. H. D. Burton, for 18 years diocesan missioner in tho diocese of St. Albans (England), a man. highly recommended for St. James's by the Bishop of London, and who had been offered the Bishopric of Rhodesia. Air. Burton was subsequently selected by tho Bishop of London and Canon Newbolt, of St. Paul's, to succeed the present Bishop of Waiapu ns vicar of St. Michael's, Christchurch, Xew Zealand. After the nomination of Dean Kile, of Hobart, had also failed owing to the action of tho Archbishop of Sydney in asking for a promise that he (tho Dean) would not nso vestments tho parochial nominators decided to abandon their task, which means that the Archbishop will how have to make tho appointment himself.
