. (From Our Special .Correspondents.) « OTAKI. As a sequel lo misconduct at a local gathering on Thursday night two young men appeared in Court yesterday morning, one bearing tho scars of war.' It was stated in evidence that both had been under tho influence of liquor, and had como to blows. One, M'Lcllan, was fined 10s., and costs 125., while the other, Driscoll, - .vas convicted and discharged, but on a second charge, that of being au incorrigible rogue, was senteuced to one month's imprisonment. Two gold watches have been awarded tho Tainui Football Club by. Messrs. Alex. M'Clelaiid and J. Johnson, for the best back and forward, and Mr. H. Nicolson has given a miniature gold football, to bu awarded as tho club desires. All football matches have been declarod "off" to-day on account of the representative match, Horowhonua and Manawatu v. Maoris at Palmerston. Constable Longbottom, of Levin, has been on relief duty hero, _ while Constable Satherley was attending a Court case in Wellington.

Mr. E. Harding and M. J. Chalmers, both of whom have carried on bicycle businesses here for some years past, have sold out .to a Pahiatua firm. ■ A largo number of horses in this district are being attacked by influenza, some fatally. One local carrier had the whole of his .teams affected, and. quite j a number are still unable to work. , Tho weather which has been experienced for some weeks past is no doubt responsible for the epidemic spreading Tho Holy Trinity Church Choir purpose rehearsing the-cantata "Joseph." Mr. Hocking, who has been, with Mr. J. B; Vcale, at "Trethella" Farm, has purchased tho property owned by the Messrs. James Bros., Maiigarawa. Tho price given was £18 per acre. • A debate arranged . between the local Debating Society and Palmerston .North Socitty took place on Wednesday evening. Palmerston were the winners on points by two. ~ ■ Several local functions fixed for Wednesday evening were "drowned out , ' by tho. heavy downpour of rain.._ The fire brigade "social" ; had. only' a. limited attendance and the Christmas Tree "social" held at tho Methodist Church, suffered also. Despite the rain, however, the foothall fixtures were carried 'out, and certainly (as far as concerned) never was -football played under such conditions. It was a mud scramble from start to finish.. The match, seniors v. Dannevirke,resulted in a drawn game; juniors defeated Cadets by 3 to nil; and Wpodville third defeated Cadets by 9 points to nil.
