iFrom Our SDecifcl Correscondont.) e The monthly meeting of the Petone A Vest School Committee was held last evening, when th,ere were present Messrs. Castle (chairman), Snow, Burridge, -Alaynard, Evans, I'arrant, Davis, Cotton, and Marsden. Considerable discussion took place over a letter received from the Wellington Householders' League, requesting tho committee to record their vote either in favour or against a referendum being taken throujhout the .Dominion on the question of Biblo reading in State schools. Mr. Burridge moved: "That this committee record its vote against tho referendum." Tho voting was equal, and, on the casting vote of tile chairman, the matter was allowed to stand aa it was. An objection was raised by the Orange Lodge, Petone, 10 tho erection .of a miniaturn rifle range on tho Roman Catholic School ground, the objectors urging the committee to do their utmost to prevent tho eadcts being compelled to do their shooting on that ground. Tho committee were of opinion that they had 110 jurisdiction in the matter. The' caretaker complained chat the utensils for cleaning the school, etc., were in bad repair. The matter was left in tho hands of Mr. Burridge to rcctify. Tho question of rnisiug tho caretaker's salary was negatived, owing to lack of funds. Tho first of a series of limelight entertainments was given in tho Methodist Church, Petone, last evening. The Rev. J. R. Clark, of Karori, assisted by the Rev. A. J. Seamer, gave a very instructive address, illustrated with beautiful views, on "Ancient and Modern Japan." During tho evening, illustrated songs were sung by Miss Muller and Mr. Chamberlain.
