NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(BY UtKNCOE.)
At the King's Theatre to-night presentations will bo mado to the season's leading jockeys. Messrs. Duncan and M'lntosh, of Manners Street, have given two. gold-mounted whips, and Mr. H. Price, of Willis Street, has donated two gold watches for tho jockeys. Hector Gray, of Auckland, receives a watch and whip as leading horseman on tho flat, and Arthur Julian, of Auckland, receives a wateli and whip as leading horseman over jumps. J. Hall, who rode Nadador to victory in the last Grand National Steeplechase, and J. Delaney, who won the last Grand National Hurdles on Compass, both announced their intention of retiring from the saddle at the conclusion of that meeting last August. At tho present time an effort is being made to induce both these riders to come out of retirement and accept mounts at. the. Grand National meeting nest month. ' C. Cress will ride Prophet in the Grand National Hurdles at lliccarton next month. On Saturday Sir Lethe will be ridden in the July Steeples by J. Hercock, while C. Cochrane will transfer Ilia attentions to Waione. Maidi and Arclight are being sent home to Feilding by the mail train to-day. Prophet is on his way from Auckland to Eiccarton to fulfil his engagement iu the Grand National Hurdles. He is aboard the Navua, due here this morning froin .Aucklaud, via Gisborne and Napier. The stallion Marble Arch, imported from Australia by Mr. W. Walters, was not allowed to land at Auckland, but was taken to Motuihi, where he will have to stay for tho necessary time to place him outside the quarantine regulations in connection with horses hailing from Brisbane. The mere fact that H. Gray is to ride California in the Winter Oats on Saturday would assure the big chestnut receiving plenty of support, even if he had no other credentials to reeommcijd him. The horse is more seasoned now than ever lie was before, and, therefore, it cannot be said that ho is overburdened with weight. Lovell is not to be raced again until the Kiccarton meeting, and both ho and Tauira will return to Porirua at once. The latter worked at Trentliam yesterday for the first time since the Winter Hurdles. The Porirua pair which is to try and win tho double at lliccarton are both in great heart, and all going well in tho meantime can be depended upon to give good accounts of themselves. In the. Waterloo Handicap on Wednesday C. Jenkins tried on two different occasions to send Sir Frisco through his field, but tho horse would not use his great pace. Kcaliisng this, Jenkinseventuully pulledhhinti t round to the outside, and then the little bay flew past the field, but too late to catch California, who by this lime held a commanding lead. As Paisano has already incurred full penalties for the National Hurdle race at Riecarton it was only to be expected that his name would be found amongst tho acceptors for tho Pinal Hurdles at Trentliam. His owner, Mr. G. B. Oman, was desirous of returning to Gisborne immediately after the Winter Hurdles, but he has v now decided to wait and see his liorso run in the Pinal Hurdks tomorrow. Southern trainer?, M. Hobbs,- W. Clarke, and G. M. Evans, left for Lvttellon by tho Maruroa last night, taking with them Burns, Northern Star, Balaclava, Rose Noble, and Scotch Plaid. Evans intends shortly to remove his team from Oanifiru to Kiccarton, where ho intends to build stables.
