£200 STOLEN.
AT SOLOMON'S KNOB DAM. NO TRACE OF THE THIEF. On Tuesday afternoon last a sum ot £200, contained in a couple-of bags, was taken out to the contractors for the Solomon's Knob waterworks (Messrs. Martin, ' Hurrell, and Snaddon) to pay the men their- week's wages. The money was taken out to Wainui in a buggy from the Hutt, and deposited early in the afternoon in the contractors' cottage near the dam-construction works now in progress. At 3.30 p.m., one of the contractors went to get the money, and found, to his great surprise, that in the brief interval it had been stolen. On being consulted last evening, Mr. Martin stated that the thief left not the slightest clue, and all efforts to sheet the theft home had so far been resultless. The matter was reported to the police, and Detective Hammond was dispatched to Wainui to make inquiries, but it is understood that there have been no developments as the result of his visit, The money belonged to the contractors, who are constructing the dam at Solomon's Knob on behalf of the Wellington City Council. | ■ " '■
