A man named John O'Keefe, well known to the police, and having several aliases and'a long list of previous con-, i, victions, was sentenced to one., month'a hard labour at the Polico Court to-day for committing a breach of the peace last night :n Broad Street, and assaulting > pedestrian. Messrs. Collis>Bros. have purchased Mr. C. Tattersall's 400-acre farm in the Kai- , rnnga district at J035 per acre. The Ayrshire herd's of the' 'Auckland province have been undergoing inspection for registration purposes in the Ayrshire Herd Book at .the hands of Mr. Chas. Woodley, the well-known Ayrshire breeder of Palmerston. Included in the herd 3 which llr. Woodley inspected was the one at the Auckland Mental Hospital, where twenty-seven cows 1 supply milk for eight hundred patients. Tho Longburn freezing works have closed down for the season. A meeting of the directors of the proposed new' freezing cqmpany for Jlanawatu was held here this afternoon, Mr. ~J.~ Br.lsillie' presiding. Those members of the directorate, who had been canrasing the district to ascertain what support would be accorded the company reported that, so .far. as they had been able, to go into the matter since last meeting, the prospects of success were very bright. It is expected that the prospectus will be ■ issued very shortly.. The Mayor, llr. J. A. Nash, presided over the annual social gathering "of the local corps of the Salvation Army last evening. Owing to the very inclement weather, the attendance was not as larg< a.5 usual at these functions. On the platform were also: Mrs. Brigadier Glover, Mr. D. W. Low, Councillor Stubbs, and Adjutant Haywood. In ad< dressing /he meeting, the Mayor' eulogised tho great work being carried out by the Army, and referred to the "rever. end founder" of the movement, General Booth, who, though eighty-one years of age, si ill took an active part in carrying on this great work. The local corps been particularly fortunate in having good officers stationed here,- and in . Adjutant and AJrs. Haywood they had officers who could not possibly be more ' keen in looking after the welfare of the . people. Councillor Stubbs and Mr. E. W. Low also spoke of the great' good to man- . kind which the Army was doing. Mrs. . Brigadier Glover read the report of the year's transactions, referring to tho many . divisions into which their work was apportioned, so that no one shovdd ba missed. A programme of vocal music was rendered during the evening, which was concluded bv the singing of the Uoxology. Tho Men's Free Club,. which was recently. opened hero through tho instrumentality of Miss Glendinning, is "tak-. lng on," as the saying is, very well. All day long and in the evenings, the room's are thronged with men, who thoroughly enjoy a place where they can gather and have a talk and a smoke, and read th( papers, . Itesidents are liberally contribute ing furniture, etc., while there is a good supply of papers and periodicals, etc. The club promises to be a great success. A sale of work was opened this afternoon at St. Andrew's Hall, in aid of tht funds t of the College Street Public' School. Thero are a number of stalls, containing the usual collection of goods, principally of the fancy order; The School Committee has found it impossible to carry on with the funds allowed, by tho Education Department, ancj ia adopting this means to "raise the wind." 1 Three representatives of the Palmer, aton Literary and Debating Society journeyed to. Woodville last night to engage in' a debating contest with representatives of the Debating Society of that town. The subject of debate was: "Has tho introduction of Labour-saving Machinery Benefited the Workers?" After an excellent debato the Palmerstoniana •rere declared the winners by the small margin of two points, the scores being SAG to 301. The Kev. Mr. Spiers and Mr. \V. H. Hawkins, of Pahiatua, were tha j tidges.
